Day 14 – Money Roots: 5 Things to Ask Yourself

So you think that money is the root of all evil. Have you ever asked what is the root of all money? ~ Ayn Rand

Money is the root of all good. ~ Ayn Rand

On Day 14 of my 30 day experiment around money, I’m tangled up in roots; the roots of money and why some people’s money flourishes and why other people’s money doesn’t.  And it all starts with the roots.

Root:  anchoring; the base of something; the cause of something; the source from which something derives.

I’m fascinated with the analogy that money is like a plant complete with roots, branches, flowers, and growth cycles.  Plants require attention and loving care in order for their roots to be strong; to produce their bounty of leaves, flowers, fruits and vegetables.

We’ve all heard our parents say things like, “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”  But I’m not so sure.  Maybe it does.

Indulge me with this creative exercise and answer the following questions:

  1. What do the roots of your money look like?  Strong and flourishing?  Pot-bound? Withered?  Diseased?  Stable?
  2. What kind of soil does your money find itself in?  Rocky?  Sandy?  Rich?  Well-composted?  Dry?  Saturated?
  3. If you were to describe your money today as a plant, what would it be?  A shriveled, spiky, unapproachable cactus?  A delicate orchid?  An ordinary azalea?
  4. If you were to describe your money in terms of what you want in the future, what kind of plant would it be?  A towering oak with multiple branches?  A resilient weed that sprouts up regardless of location or situation?  A lilac with brilliant, fragrant blooms?
  5. If you were to treat your money like a plant, what kind of attention does it need?  A new pot?  More light?  Better soil?  Severe pruning?  Fertilizer?  Kind words?

Interesting, isn’t it?

The one fun thing I’m going to be doing today to have more money come my way is to create a visual representation of my money as a plant.  Healthy.  Strong.  Vibrant.  Beautiful.  I’m going to put that picture where I can see it and be reminded of my roots.

What kind of plant is your money?  I’m dying to know!

Ever-brilliant, Andrea. I think these posts just keep getting better and better. Thought of compiling them and actually having fun making money from them?!? :)

And honestly speaking, I’m not a plant person – AT ALL – but when I do even oblique aspects of this exercise I realize that the two might go hand-in-hand: my dislike for gardening and my constant consternation over money. Hmmmmm.
