Wishing for a Unicorn

in Happiness

The season of wishes is upon us. I know this to be true, even without the snow and ice that has descended upon my town. Without batting an eye, my daughter informed me that she is wishing for a unicorn. My response? I told her that was one of the best wishes I had ever heard.

A unicorn. A magical creature. A fantastical wish. Something seemingly unattainable but wished for nonetheless.

Over the years, wishing seems to have acquired a bad reputation. Like it doesn’t count for anything. Like if you wished for something fantastical people would secretly say, “who does she think she is?” Like if you wished for something amazing, the obvious answer would be, “that can’t be done.”

I’m sure you have all heard these sayings:

Wish in one hand, spit in the other and see which one you have the most in.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

Wishing won’t make it so.

The suggestion carried by these sayings is that wishing has no weight or value. That wishing is for dreamers, not doers.

I totally disagree. Wishes are the seeds that must be planted before anything great will grow. Wishes are the beginning. The spark.

This little reminder to myself about the power of wishes comes at a good time.  Lately, I have found my dreams shrinking in proportion to the anxiety that occasionally surfaces in my life. I keep trying to fit my dreams into my current reality. Which is totally backwards. If I keep doing that, the only thing I will grow are small, pathetic, anemic dreams. I’m going to start wishing in a much bigger way. Sowing the seeds of bigger dreams.

The time is right for planting amazing, fantastical wishes….

What is the most incredible thing you could wish for?

What is that larger-than-life thing you really want?

What is that “no, I couldn’t really dare to wish it” wish?

Wish it. Give birth to your desires. Send them out into the world on little wings of love. It is the season for wishing, after all.

I am wishing for a unicorn. You?

Oh, what a fun, magical, sparkly post.

I’m wishing that my own Prince Charming will be able to come for Christmas.

He’s gotten the invite. Maybe putting this out there to the rest of the world will make it so.

You can have the unicorn!

Cheers. ;)
